In this session, teachers experience a geometry lesson where students engage in a design challenge. Teachers will create a floor plan for the space based on different needs of the students. We will discuss how this lesson promotes mathematical thinking, as well as student reflection on inclusion.
In this session, we engage teachers in design-based lesson that uses geometric shapes, symmetry, and rigid transformations to design a culturally responsive textile. We offer teachers a chance to experience how math can promote empathy between students and build community within the classroom.
Teachers participate in a middle school geometry lesson designing lanterns. Using symmetry and geometric shapes, teachers will sketch, cut, and assemble lanterns. We end by reflecting on the design process, anticipating student thinking, and sharing experiences from real middle school classrooms.
